ORG was proud to take part in the Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation’s (BREEF) 2nd Extreme Hangout—a global, TED Talk-inspired event designed to give young change-makers a platform to take action on climate issues.
The two-day experience brought students from New Providence, Eleuthera, and Abaco together to explore, engage, and lead. Day 1 unfolded at Goodman’s Bay Beach, where students snorkelled, created ocean-themed art, interacted safely with marine life, and connected through nature-based team-building activities.
ORG Engagement Outreach Manager Ariannah Wells reflected on the impact of the event, saying:
“Events like this play a powerful role in shaping informed, empowered youth who will lead the way in protecting our oceans and making more sustainable choices for the future.”
She added, “I left the BREEF Extreme Hangout feeling inspired and hopeful that the next generation is not only aware of the challenges our oceans face but that they are ready to do better than we did.”
Day 2, themed Climate, Policy & Active Citizenship, was hosted at the New Providence Community Center (NPCC). Students dove into meaningful dialogue around climate solutions, participated in hands-on activities, and took center stage during a panel discussion—moderated by ORG Deputy Executive Director Steffon Evans—that encouraged them to think critically about the issues impacting their future.
During his welcome remarks, Steffon commented “We may have different personalities and backgrounds, some of you may be more outspoken, some of you more reserved, but your voice, and your actions matter”. The activities throughout the day encouraged students to actively participate, engage with their peers, and think critical and share perspectives on climate-related issues.
