ORG’s 2024 position paper on The Bahamas Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2017

This position paper highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in a democracy and reviews the history and current status of the FOIA. While enacted in 2017, the FOIA is not fully implemented, hindering public access to information. This updated paper details the benefits of FOIA, including enhancing public trust, empowering citizens, and combating corruption. It emphasizes ORG’s role in advocating for FOIA’s passage and continued commitment to its full enactment. The document also outlines how the FOIA will work once fully operational, challenges to implementation, and recommendations for the government to prioritize full enactment.
