Junior Local Government Elections

On an amazing day for democracy, our Assistant Director Steffon Evans had the privilege of representing ORG as a local observer for the revival of the Junior Council of Local Government. He joined a delegation led by Minister Clay Sweeting and Parliamentary Secretary Leonardo Lightbourne that visited schools on 3 islands.

Over 6,400 students from across the islands of The Bahamas took part in this incredible election process. More than 500 enthusiastic students bravely threw their hats into the ring, all with a shared vision to make a difference in their local communities.

What did this amazing initiative entail, you ask? Well, the students engaged in brainstorming community challenges, crafted compelling campaigns, registered to vote, and exercised their democratic right by casting their ballots.

Kudos to the Department of Local Government, the Parliamentary Registry Department (PRD), and fantastic partners like ORG, the US Embassy, the RBPF, and other government agencies. Their combined efforts made this initiative a true reflection of local and national elections, complete with real ballots, ballot boxes, and PRD-approved procedures.
